Stephen Toof Brown, III
![]() ![]() |
Stephen
Toof Brown, III, is a fifth-generation Memphian. The story goes that his
great-great grandfather, S.C. Toof, came down the Mississippi River with
only a quarter in his pocket, then somehow managed to turn that coin into a
successful printing business that was the mark of his family for
generations.
Stephen Toof Brown, Jr., and Betty McCrae Brown presented Toof III to the world Sept. 5, 1963. He was a delight to his older sisters, Stephanie and Sandra, who loved to perform skits for him in his crib. This quiet boy spent his time drawing, reading encyclopedias, and playing with toy cars. He began duck hunting at 13 at his father’s duck club, Wild Acres. He went to Briarcrest Christian schools from junior high on. In high school he performed in school plays. At this time, he experienced one of his life’s major changes. His family was joined by three new step-siblings (Crosby, Stuart, and Keenon) brought to join the family with his step-mother, Suzanne. When Toof left high school, his options were wide open, and he made sure he took an adequate amount of time mulling over life’s possibilities. With a little school here, and a little work there, the Eighties passed. Eight years after graduating high school, Toof graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in political science. From there he took off to Washington D.C. to work as a staffer for (then Democrat) Sen. Richard Shelby from Alabama. After nearly five years in our nation’s capital, Toof decided to pursue a career in law. He headed back to Razorback Country and enrolled in law school. (This degree didn’t take quite as long.) Toof returned to his hometown to pursue a career in law. After a few years in practice, Toof accepted a staff position at the University of Memphis Law Library, where he is currently Assistant Director of Reference and Circulation. He is also a member of the Memphis Rotary Club. When he doesn’t have his nose in a law book, Toof enjoys talking baby talk to his rambunctious yellow lab, Portia (a.k.a. “Pookie”). At other times, he can be found updating his blog, where he posts his astute commentary about life and politics. Also he enjoys photography, reading vintage TinTin comics, and watching countless hours of colored blurs screaming around tracks, also known as Formula One racing. In fact, he loves racing so much that he traveled to Monte Carlo last spring to see the Grand Prix for himself. Toof is a caring, patient man with quiet intelligence and a deep connection to his home and his family. He and Ashley look forward to adding a new branch to their family histories. |
